Synopsis
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map―the key to a legendary treasure trove―seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
Review
This book is the kind of read that lures you in for just a chapter before bed, only to keep you turning pages late into the night. Inspired by my recent binge of the anime One Piece, I found myself craving a pirate-themed story. This book marks my first foray into the genre, and it certainly won’t be my last.
Initially, I expected a high-seas adventure filled with swashbuckling fights, buried treasure, and a hint of romance. While the book veers away from these typical tropes, it surprised me in the best way. I truly enjoyed the narrative, even if it diverged from my expectations.
If you appreciate strong, sassy female protagonists, Alosa is a character you’ll love. Her siren heritage caught me completely off guard when revealed midway through the story. Admittedly, this might have been a detail I overlooked, considering the title of the second book gives away her lineage, “Daughter of the Siren Queen”.
Overall, Daughter of the Pirate King is a captivating debut that blends adventure, wit, and a hint of romance in a way that feels fresh and engaging. Tricia Levenseller’s strong characterisation and clever plotting kept me invested in Alosa’s journey, and I found myself routing for her every step of the way. If you’re looking for a pirate story with a fierce heroine and plenty of unexpected twists, this book is a must-read.
I can’t wait to dive into the sequel, Daughter of the Siren Queen, to see where Alosa’s adventures lead her next.
